The story is amazing, but at some places, it feels as if there were questions that weren’t answered. Even though it was the debut book, the cover could have had a better look to it. Honestly, there isn’t much I disliked about this book, but if I have to nitpick, I would say,

The Silent Patient has a very mature story line and it is full of random loves scenes and sporadic swearing that adds the sweet and fun factor to this not-so-funny book. The subtle differences between sane and insane characters are evident from the beginning, but as the story progresses, it is really fun to see the lines getting blurry as the story unravels. The Author sets the mood by telling about the weather, to make the reader feel as if they are there. How a kid’s childhood shapes them into a person they become. I really love how he justifies the characters’ mental state with their actions, without telling the reader.

Alex Michaelides is an amazing author, who sure knows how to keep the reader engaged all the time. The author has used sporadic journals to make you see the human side of the “monster” Alicia had become, but he also shows the not so subtle differences amongst all the characters and what made them who they were.

Almost the entire story is set in England, but the way Michalidies uses words like “mate” and “innit”, famous landmarks, gloomy weather, Pubs and bigger pint-sizes, really gives the unique British tincture to The Silent Patient. As someone on the internet said: “This book is unputdownable”. The book is basically divided into 5 PARTS with small or smaller chapters, which I feel really adds to the fast pace of the book. The secondary plot lines, somehow, all mingle so effortlessly that you won’t even notice, but there are enough unanswered questions that would make you ask for more. A constant flux of mind-boggling lines is enough to keep you hooked.

There are enough characters to keep you engaged and guessing about the murder mystery. The plot switches between current events where Theo is trying to piece it all together to the night Alicia brutally shot her husband five times, and excerpts from Alicia’s journal which gradually show how her mental state was deteriorating over the course of time. Most of the story line revolves around ‘The Grove’ (mental health care facility), London and Cambridge (Alicia’s former and latter homes, respectively). Narrated by Theo, a forty-two-year-old psychotherapist, who shows interest to help an unstable artist, Alicia (the patient), convicted of killing her husband 7 years ago. A Psychotherapist tries to help her, or somehow attempts to vicariously help himself?Īn intertwined mix of this psychological Oomph and an amazing plot, The Silent Patient, the debut Novel from a Greek-English author Alex Michaelides might just be the book to get you off your reading slump. There are so many layers and so many questions about marriage, shame, and the power dynamics that animate our most dysfunctional relationships. An established painter with impeccable prospects kills her husband in cold blood and doesn’t utter a word after the unfortunate incident. This is the type of thriller I love the most: A taut domestic suspense with just a shade of police procedural woven in. Did Aaron really die? If so, then who moved him? Suddenly, all hell has broken loose. Much to her surprise, his body immediately goes missing. But one secret we know right away: Lila killed her husband Aaron, setting it up to look like a suicide. It means she hasn’t told us all of her secrets yet. Lila Ridgefield isn’t who she says she is, but that doesn’t make her unreliable. I don’t want to say too much but this book has it all, including a protagonist who is keeping secrets and characters who all-for some reason or another-fall under suspicion, and maybe not even for the murder. I budgeted two weeks to read Pretty Little Wife, which is funny because I devoured it in two days.
